A neuropsychological evaluation may be requested by your provider to determine if various cognitive domains such as attention, executive functioning, learning/ memory, language, and visuospatial skills are within expectation. A comprehensive evaluation is highly sensitive to subtle changes in these areas and can help diagnose various medical and psychiatric conditions. it can also be helpful in determining the impact of a known condition (e.g. stroke, TBI, brain tumor etc).
The evaluation begins with a clinical interview in which the presenting concern(s) are discussed and a thorough history is collected. For the first part, patients may wish to bring a support person who knows them well and who can provide collateral information. However, this is not required. After the clinical interview has concluded, a test battery is created to examine the area(s) of concern. Of note, a flexible test battery is used, which means that the testing procedures are tailored specifically for each patient. After testing concludes for the day, your tests will be scored and results will be written in a comprehensive report which will be reviewed during a feedback session.
A full evaluation can take between 3-6 hours to complete, but can take much longer depending on the complexity of the issues that will be addressed in the evaluation. In some instances, it may be necessary to complete the evaluation in multiple sessions.
Your results will be provided only to you UNLESS a Release of Information (ROI) form is signed which allows for the sharing of results with others.
Yes, at Advanced Neurobehavioral Diagnostics all neuropsychological evaluations are considered to be "clinical," in nature. Clinical assessments are confidential and are generally requested by medical providers, friends/family, or even by the patient themselves. A forensic evaluation is not private and is generally a part of a legal process. These evaluations are completed by providers with an expertise in forensic assessments.
Given the length of testing, breaks are permitted as needed. If the evaluation is scheduled for a full day, a lunch break is generally encouraged.
A neuropsychological evaluation does not entail neuroimaging, physical examination, or any type of invasive procedures (e.g. blood draws etc).
If you are unable to attend your appointment, please make sure you cancel at least 24 hours prior (when possible). Given the length of the testing appointments, it is often difficult to schedule a new patient on short notice. There is a cancellation/no-show fee of $100 (emergencies are an exception).
